In this WoW group guide we will be talking a bit about the role of the tank in group and raid situations. Too many players think that they are a tank simply because they have plate armor on. This could not be further from the truth.

Tank Classes

Many think that simply because they wear plate armor they are a tank. If you believe this then you need to be re-educated. Tanking is not determined by armor type. While most tanks do in fact wear plate do not forget that a druid can be an effective tank as well while wearing only leather

Tank Specs

To be a true tank there are only three class/spec combinations.

The protection warrior is the atypical tank. Massive armor class and multiple taunting abilities make them so and they are extremely effective against single targets.

Protection paladins share many aspects with their warrior counterparts but have the ability to heal themselves in emergencies. These holy warriors are very effective against multiple targets since their area effect abilities can hold the attention of a crowd.

Feral druids are the last of the tanking class/specs. A feral druid receives a massive increase to their armor class when in bear form and can be successful in solo and group tanking situations. However they do lack in the area of effect department when trying to maintain agro.

Role

The role of a tank in any group situation is to be in the front and take the brunt of the damage, hence the term often used to describe the tank a “Meatshield.” You will use your body to shield the rest of your group.

The entire role of the tank in a group situation is to hold agro. That is it. You are not a primary damage dealer. In most groups and raids you will find the tank at the bottom of the damage list and that is where you should be. Concentrate on keeping the target or targets on you at all times.

To be successful in group and raid situations everyone must do their job and it all begins with the tank. If the tank cannot sustain agro then the group is lost. The target will jump from the tank and kill the healers and ranged members very quickly and a tank without a healer is one thing….DEAD.
